Virginia Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Virginia is the highest court in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1789, it serves as the final arbiter of legal disputes and the ultimate interpreter of Virginia law. The Court consists of seven justices who are elected by the Virginia General Assembly for terms of 12 years.

The Court has both original and appellate jurisdiction. Its appellate jurisdiction extends to all cases, civil and criminal, decided by the Court of Appeals of Virginia, and to certain cases decided by circuit courts. The Court also has original jurisdiction in cases of habeas corpus, mandamus, prohibition, and other writs.
